Catching Up

The past several months have been a whirlwind for me. My sweet dog of 10 years became suddenly ill and died in early December. I’m not over it and I still can’t talk about it except to say I’m still grieving.

My lingering grief coupled with my growing dissatisfaction for my day job compelled me to shake things up in my life. I parted ways with my employer and booked a solo five week trip to rural Ireland.

I didn’t have any great epiphanies while traveling abroad, and while I’m not completely healed from the loss of my beloved pet, I did find a renewed energy for my art. I’m also unemployed, so I have a lot of time to sculpt!

One of my first projects was to put together an art community of sorts. The idea is still in the beginning stages and I only have a vague idea of where I want to go with the group, but our first meeting is in a few weeks.

There was a recurring image that came to me in different forms while I was in Ireland. I saw it in nature, in paintings, in sculpture, and I acquired a piece of jewelry with this image. The image is the hare. I didn’t realize how much it had influenced me until someone else pointed out how I seemed to be drawn to them. Drawn to them, indeed. I started drawing them and imagining ways to sculpt them. And now that I’m home, I’ve started on a series of hares that continues to generate new ideas for me.

The other project I’m working on is my large sculptures. My unicorn sculpture is nearly completed, I have a dragon bust sculpture started, and I have new ideas for a third and fourth large sculpture.

The next step for me is to exhibit. I need to work on this one.
